Breathe In, Hike Out: The Best Local Trails for a Summer Escape

Local Hikes You’ll Love (Even If You’re Just in It for the Views and the Post-Hike Snacks)
If you're craving fresh air, killer views, and a little movement outside of your normal real estate route (guilty), you're in luck — there are SO many great hikes just a short drive away. Whether you’re in the mood for a riverside stroll, a wooded escape, or something that makes your quads cry just a little, here’s a roundup of some local favorites — plus a few hidden gems you might not have tried yet.
Pro Tip: I swear by the AllTrails app. It’s like GPS for your boots — maps, reviews, and trail difficulty all in one place!
Frederick, MD Favorites
Catoctin Mountain Park – Thurmont, MD
North of Frederick and full of beauty. Don’t skip Chimney Rock or Cunningham Falls — they’re crowd favorites for a reason.
Why I love it: Trails for all levels + the cool factor of hiking near Camp David.
Gambrill State Park – Frederick, MD
Known for valley views that are
chef’s kiss.
Best trail: White Oak Loop — a great “middle of the road” hike when you want a challenge but also want to feel your legs the next day.
Harpers Ferry, WV Area
Maryland Heights Trail – Harpers Ferry Overlook
The hike for iconic views of where the rivers meet.
It’s a bit of a climb, but that overlook? Totally worth it.
Loudoun Heights Trail
Fewer people, same stunning views.
Part of the AT and a bit more secluded — great for when you want the view without the crowds.
Weverton Cliffs
A shorter spur off the Appalachian Trail that delivers big-time views.
Perfect for early risers (sunrise lovers, this one’s for you!).
Washington, DC Escapes
Rock Creek Park – DC
32+ miles of trail
in the city.
Great for a nature break between showings or meetings downtown.
Theodore Roosevelt Island – Arlington, VA
Boardwalks, wetlands, and history all wrapped up in one easy loop.
Ideal for a low-key stroll (or convincing your kids that hiking is fun).
Billy Goat Trail (Section A) – Great Falls, MD
If you're in the mood to climb a little and scramble a lot, this is the one.
Warning: Not for flip-flops. Trust me.
Loudoun County, VA Love
Bear’s Den Overlook – Bluemont, VA
Short hike,
huge reward.
Great for sunsets or clearing your head after a long day.
Red Rock Wilderness – Leesburg, VA
Easy, shaded, and sprinkled with history.
Good for families, newbies, or when you’re just there for the vibes.
Balls Bluff Battlefield – Leesburg, VA
History meets riverside serenity.
One of those spots you forget exists, but always feel better after visiting.
Fredericksburg, VA Finds
Alum Spring Park – Right in town
Shaded, peaceful, and has a very Instagrammable stone bridge.
A quick nature break without leaving town limits.
Motts Run Reservoir
Trails + water + wildlife = zen.
Bring a picnic — you’ll want to linger.
Shenandoah Hidden Gems
Jones Run Falls Trail
A lesser-known waterfall trail with ALL the forest magic.
Bonus: Can be paired with Doyle’s River Trail for a loop.
Doyle’s River Trail
More waterfalls, more ferns, more peace.
Combine with Jones Run for an unforgettable day hike.
Stony Man Trail
Easy but mighty — some of the best views with very little effort.
Great if you’re hiking with little ones or just don’t feel like suffering.
Hazel River Trail
For the long-haul hikers: waterfalls, swimming holes, no crowds.
It’s 8.5 miles, so bring snacks and a good playlist.
Rose River Loop
Scenic, moderate, and full of bridges and waterfalls.
Family-friendly and easy to love.
Quick Summer Hiking Tips:
- Bring more water than you think. Then bring a little more.
- Go early to beat both the heat and the masses.
- Check for ticks (because… ew).
- Respect the trails — trash doesn’t belong in nature (or on my timeline).
No matter what trail you choose, there’s something about summer hikes that makes you feel alive (and maybe a little sweaty). Whether you’re hiking solo, bringing your crew, or making it a post-showing adventure, there’s a trail out there waiting for you.
Got a favorite I didn’t list? Send it my way — I’m always up for adding a new trail to my rotation!
