Whether you’re in the mood for a riverside stroll, a wooded escape, or something that makes your quads cry just a little, here’s a roundup of some local favorites — plus a few hidden gems you might not have tried yet.

Frederick, MD Favorites
Catoctin Mountain Park – Thurmont, MD
North of Frederick and full of beauty. Don’t skip Chimney Rock or Cunningham Falls — they’re crowd favorites for a reason.
Why I love it: Trails for all levels + the cool factor of hiking near Camp David.
Gambrill State Park – Frederick, MD
Known for valley views that are
chef’s kiss.
Best trail: White Oak Loop — a great “middle of the road” hike when you want a challenge but also want to feel your legs the next day.
Harpers Ferry, WV Area
Maryland Heights Trail – Harpers Ferry Overlook
The hike for iconic views of where the rivers meet.
It’s a bit of a climb, but that overlook? Totally worth it.
Loudoun Heights Trail
Fewer people, same stunning views.
Part of the AT and a bit more secluded — great for when you want the view without the crowds.

One of those spots you forget exists, but always feel better after visiting.

Alum Spring Park – Right in town
Shaded, peaceful, and has a very Instagrammable stone bridge.
A quick nature break without leaving town limits.
