Keep Your Pets Safe and Happy This Halloween!

Pet-Friendly Halloween Tips for Homeowners

Halloween is one of my favorite fall traditions: the costumes, the candy, the porch lights glowing, and the smell of fall in the air! But while we’re having fun greeting trick-or-treaters, our furry friends might not be quite as thrilled. The doorbell ringing nonstop, strangers in masks, and all that chocolate can make for a stressful night for pets.

A little preparation can go a long way toward keeping them safe (and keeping you worry-free). Here are a few quick pet-friendly Halloween tips:

1. Watch That Door

With the door opening all evening for trick-or-treaters, it’s easy for curious dogs or cats to slip out. You might want to keep them in a quiet room away from the commotion. You can also use a baby gate to block off the entryway.

2. Decorate Safely

Pumpkins, candles, and string lights make everything look festive, but they can be tempting (and dangerous) for pets. Swap real candles for flameless ones, and keep cords and décor out of tail range.

3. Hide the Candy Stash

Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free treats), raisins, and even candy wrappers can be harmful to pets. Keep candy bowls up high and remind little ones not to share. Want your pet to join the fun? Have a few special treats just for them!

4. Costumes: Cute but Optional

Pet costumes are adorable... until your dog decides they’re not. If your pet looks stressed or uncomfortable, skip the costume and go with a simple bandana or festive collar instead. Always avoid small parts that can be chewed or swallowed.

5. Create a Calm Space

Between the doorbell, laughter, and costumes, it can all be a bit much for pets. Set up a cozy, quiet spot with their favorite blanket and toys. Add some calming music or white noise to help them relax.

Halloween can be a blast for the whole family, fur babies included, with just a little extra care. Keep the candy out of reach, the decorations safe, and your pets comfy, and everyone can enjoy the night. 🎃🐶🐱
