Making Home Feel a Little Cozier This Fall 🍂
Start With the Lighting
This might be one of the easiest ways to completely change the feel of a room.
As it starts getting darker earlier, I’m much more likely to turn on a lamp than a big overhead light. Lamps, sconces, under-cabinet lighting, picture lights, candles...all of those smaller sources of light instantly make a room feel warmer and more inviting.
And if your light bulbs are giving off that bright, almost-blue light, try switching them for a warmer tone. It's such a small change, but it can make a HUGE difference.
Add Warmth Without Redecorating
You definitely don't need to repaint a room every season.
Instead, bring in warmer colors through things you can easily swap out: throw pillows, blankets, hand towels, artwork, greenery, or even a few branches clipped from outside.
Deep greens, warm browns, creams, muted rusts, and natural wood tones all work beautifully for fall without screaming FALL DECOR.
And bonus: most of those colors can stay out well past Thanksgiving.
Bring on the Blankets
This is probably the easiest one.
Add a chunky blanket to the couch. Swap out a couple of pillows. Bring in a woven basket to hold extra throws. Add a rug to a room that feels like it's missing something.
Mixing different textures: wood, knits, linen, leather, woven baskets makes a room feel collected and lived-in instead of overly decorated.
And I will always choose comfortable and lived-in over a room nobody is allowed to touch.
Make Your House Smell Good
This might be my favorite part of fall.
There is something about walking into a house that smells amazing that instantly makes it feel more welcoming.
Light your favorite candle, make a simmer pot, bake something, or just make a fresh pot of coffee. It doesn't necessarily have to smell like pumpkin spice and cinnamon (although I am certainly not opposed).
Pick something that makes you happy when you walk through the door.
Create One Spot You Love
You don't have to tackle your entire house.
Pick ONE spot.
Maybe it's the chair where you drink your morning coffee. Maybe it's your couch for family movie nights. Maybe it's your kitchen island where everyone inevitably ends up standing and talking.
Add a lamp. Put a blanket nearby. Clear off the clutter. Add a plant or a candle.
Sometimes making one little corner of your house feel really good has a way of making the whole house feel better.
And While We're at It…Clear Some Stuff Out
I know. Not nearly as fun as buying a new blanket!
But sometimes the thing making a room feel "off" isn't what it's missing...it's that there's just too much stuff in it.
Fall is actually a great time to do a mini reset before we head into the holidays. Clear off the kitchen counters, clean out the entryway, donate the pile you've been meaning to deal with, and put away some of the things you aren't using.
You might be surprised how much better your house feels without buying a single thing.
Your Home Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
One thing I've learned from being in A LOT of houses over the years is that the homes that feel the best aren't necessarily the biggest, newest, most expensive, or most perfectly decorated.
They're the ones that feel like the people who live there.
They're comfortable. They're welcoming. They have family pictures, blankets tossed over the couch, shoes by the door, kids' stuff in places it probably shouldn't be, and a kitchen where everyone somehow ends up gathering.
That's what home is supposed to feel like.
So as we head into fall, don't worry about making your house look like something you saw on Pinterest. Add a few things you love, clear out a few things you don't, light the candle, grab the blanket, and enjoy the home you're in.
Because at the end of the day, that's what I love most about real estate. It's never really just about the house.
It's about finding—and creating—a place that feels like home. ❤️
There’s just something about fall that makes me want to be home.
Maybe it’s the cooler mornings, the earlier sunsets, football on TV, or the fact that suddenly a blanket on the couch and a cup of coffee sound better than just about anything else.
And while I love a good pumpkin on the porch as much as the next person, making your home feel cozy for fall doesn’t mean you have to completely redecorate or fill every available surface with pumpkins.
Sometimes it’s the smallest changes that make your house feel like a place you actually want to slow down and spend time in.
