The Ultimate Fall Home Checklist: 10 Things to Do Before Winter Hits Northern Virginia
The Ultimate Fall Home Checklist: 10 Things to Do Before Winter Hits Northern Virginia
Fall in Northern Virginia is one of my FAVORITE times of year. The changing leaves, crisp mornings, pumpkin everything, and finally being able to sit outside without melting. What's not to love?
But before we get too comfortable with our cozy blankets and Halloween candy (that we definitely bought for the trick-or-treaters...), there's a little homeowner housekeeping we need to talk about.
I know, I know. Home maintenance isn't nearly as exciting as decorating your front porch with mums and pumpkins. But trust me, a little preparation now can save you some BIG headaches when winter rolls around.
Here are 10 things I'd recommend checking off your list before the colder weather arrives.

1. Give Those Gutters Some Attention
Those beautiful fall leaves? Not quite as beautiful when they're clogging your gutters. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear so rainwater can flow away from your home. You may need to do this more than once as the leaves continue falling!
2. Schedule Your HVAC Tune-Up
The last thing anyone wants is to discover their heat isn't working on the first freezing morning of the year. Schedule a professional heating system check, replace your filters, and make sure everything is running efficiently.
3. Check Your Windows and Doors
Feeling a little draft? Check the weatherstripping and caulking around windows and exterior doors. Small gaps can let cold air in and send your heating bill up.
4. Disconnect Your Garden Hoses
This is one of those little tasks that's SO easy to forget. Disconnect and drain your hoses, shut off exterior water supplies where applicable, and winterize outdoor faucets before freezing temperatures arrive.
5. Show Your Fireplace Some Love
If you have a wood-burning fireplace, have your chimney inspected and cleaned as needed before lighting that first cozy fire. Gas fireplaces need appropriate maintenance, too!
6. Take a Look at Your Roof
You don't need to climb up there yourself! From the ground, look for missing shingles, loose flashing, or anything that looks out of place. Have a professional investigate concerns before winter weather makes them worse.
7. Tidy Up Your Yard
Rake or mulch fallen leaves, clear debris from drainage areas, and take care of any landscaping that needs attention. Your springtime self will thank you.
8. Put Away Outdoor Furniture
Clean and properly store or cover your outdoor furniture, cushions, and other seasonal items. It only takes a little effort to help keep everything looking great for next year.
9. Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
A quick but VERY important reminder! Test your alarms, replace batteries where needed, and check expiration dates. With heating systems and fireplaces getting more use, this is especially important.
10. Stock Up Before Winter Weather
You know how Northern Virginia gets when there's even a mention of snow in the forecast. Make sure you have ice melt, a snow shovel, flashlights, and other essentials ready BEFORE everyone rushes to the store.
A Little Maintenance Goes a Long Way!
Whether you've lived in your home for 20 years or just picked up your keys, staying on top of seasonal maintenance is one of the best ways to protect your investment.
And if you're thinking about selling in the next year, keeping up with these little things now can make preparing your home for the market SO much easier later.
Now go enjoy that pumpkin spice latte. You've earned it! ☕🍁
