7 New Year's Resolutions You Can Continue to Accomplish in 2026

Every January starts the same way…

A fresh calendar, big energy, and a long mental list of all the things we’re definitely going to accomplish this year.

Eat healthier.

Work out more.
Read all the books.
Save all the money.
Become the most organized, well-rested, glowing version of ourselves by, like… March. Easy, right?

And then real life shows up....and now it is February!

Schedules get busy. Work gets full. Kids need rides. The dog needs to go out. Dinner still has to happen.
Suddenly those giant goals feel less inspiring and more… exhausting.

If the last few years have taught me anything, it’s this:
Life is unpredictable, and perfection isn’t the goal. Progress is.

I love the idea of continuing to choose small, meaningful shifts that actually fit into real life. The kind you can stick with for the rest of the year...even on the busy weeks.

Here are a few simple, feel-good ideas for the year ahead:

  • Try one new thing each month.
Nothing dramatic, just something different. A new restaurant in Loudoun, a class you’ve been curious about, a paint color you’ve been scared to try, or finally visiting that local spot everyone talks about. Twelve small adventures still make a pretty great year. This is something that I will be trying to do this year!
  • Save a little, not perfectly.
It doesn’t have to be huge. Even small, steady saving creates breathing room and peace of mind over time. Progress over perfection always wins.
  • Do one small thing that’s kinder to the planet.
Reusable bags. Donating instead of tossing. One plant-based meal here and there. Tiny choices add up more than we think.
  • Lead with kindness, especially toward yourself.
Send the text. Make the call. Grab the cupcake. Take the day off when you need it. We’re usually hardest on ourselves, and this is your reminder that you don’t have to earn rest or joy.
  • Refresh your routine in a way that feels good.
More walks outside. A new workout class. A different hairstyle. Clothes that make you feel confident when you walk into a room.
Wellness isn’t a number on a scale, it’s how you feel living your everyday life.
  • Cook something new once in a while.
Not every night (because pizza happens and that’s okay).
But one new recipe here and there saves money, feels healthier, and might even become a new family favorite.
  • And maybe the most important one… get more sleep.
Real sleep changes everything: your mood, energy, patience, and focus.
It’s not glamorous, but it might be the most powerful reset of all.

At the end of the day, a new year doesn’t magically create a brand-new you.
But it does offer a gentle invitation to keep growing...slowly, imperfectly, and in ways that actually fit your real life.

And honestly?
Those small, steady changes are usually the ones that matter most.

Here’s to a year that feels less about pressure…
and more about living well in the middle of the beautiful, busy, everyday moments

Outdoor kitchen in backyard
By Maggie Gessner May 26, 2026
Outdoor kitchens have become one of the biggest backyard upgrades over the past few years. What used to be a simple grill on the patio has turned into full outdoor living spaces with built-in grills, pizza ovens, refrigerators, bars, fireplaces, lounge seating… honestly some of them are nicer than indoor kitchens at this point. But with some outdoor kitchen setups costing as much as a full interior renovation, a lot of homeowners are wondering: Is it actually worth the investment? Or is this one of those trends everyone will move on from in a few years? Honestly? I think the answer depends on how you live, where you live, and whether you’ll truly use the space. Why Outdoor Kitchens Became So Popular I think a huge shift happened during the pandemic when people started investing more into their homes and outdoor spaces. Suddenly backyards became gathering spots, offices, play spaces, vacation spots, and entertainment areas all at once.
Cozy interior look

If you’ve been feeling like homes lately are starting to feel a little warmer, cozier, and more personal… you are absolutely not imagining it. The super stark white and overly minimal look is slowly fading, and honestly? I’m kind of loving the shift. Homes are starting to feel lived in again in the best possible way. Less “perfect showroom” and more layered, welcoming, personality-filled spaces that actually make you want to stay awhile. Here are some of the biggest interior design trends I’m seeing heading into Summer 2026:

Spring market is here… and if you’ve been even thinking about buying a home, you’ve probably felt it. 🌸 More homes are hitting the market, everything feels a little more alive, and buyers start coming out of the woodwork. It’s an exciting time, but it can also move fast. Like… “that house just listed and already has multiple offers” fast. The good news? A little prep on the front end (especially with financing) can make the entire process feel so much more manageable. Start with financing before you fall in love with a house I know...it’s way more fun to scroll listings and pop into open houses. But one of the best things you can do is connect with a lender before you start seriously touring. This helps you: Understand what price range actually feels comfortable Get a realistic idea of your monthly payment (not just the purchase price) See what loan options make the most sense for you It doesn’t lock you into anything, it just gives you clarity. And in a fast-moving market, clarity = confidence.
